Whistleblowers - Are they protected, or is it career ending?

One of the biggest takeaways from Wirecard was again around Whistleblowers being victimized. It's not the first time, and it won't be the last. Whistleblowers - Are they protected, or is it career ending?

We have unfortunately seen that coming forward and speaking up can destroy careers, and it comes with a personal cost-benefit analysis.

It's not that the person lacks morals, integrity, or ethics - instead, there is the bigger picture of a family to feed, a career not to end in tatters, and the mental and physical impact of speaking up - Do you:

1. speak up with fear of retaliation/being victimised in your own workplace/overlooked for promotion and bonus?
2. believe you can be complacent and continue to live with knowing this in my workplace? or
3. vote with your feet and find a new job because you know nothing will change?

The unfortunate truth is in most instances it is #3.
